Introduction

Golf was first introduced into Morocco at the beginning of the century, even before football, and has since become a national passion. The number of courses throughout the country is on the increase, some of which have been designed by international masters such as Robert Trent Jones, Cabell B Robinson and Jack Nicklaus. This craze for the game is also a reflection of royal favour, since golf was the favourite sport of the late King Hassan II, who acquired international ranking by creating the competition for the elegant and much-prized Hassan II Trophy. 

Golf in Morocco is hot stuff in every way - glorious weather and glorious courses - and all this a mere three hours from London - less time than it takes to play nine holes at some of the overcrowded Spanish and Portuguese courses, and a good deal less expensive. Green fees are generally lower than in Europe and vary from about £8-36 (12-54 EUR), and caddies, all shrewd and knowledgeable, only charge about £6 (9 EUR). Most courses offer club hiring facilities as well as caddies or electric carts.

All the golf clubs described are open to the public, even if access to them is sometimes limited to players possessing a handicap card. Pre-booking is recommended and some courses may be closed one day a week.

Agadir Courses

Golf courses are a living oases in the middle of Agadir. Their lush vegetation is in direct contrast with the arid environment of the region. Agadir boasts three international-calibre courses located adjacent to each other.

Golf of the Sun (Golf du Soleil)
This magnificent course has 27 holes, which have been designed for the discriminating golfer. Spread over 86 ha the course has a 35 handicap. The site is characterized by a large strategically located water hazard that provides a challenge to most golfers. Training and practice lessons are also available.

Golf of the Dunes (Les Dunes Golf)
This course is made up of three nine-hole courses which can be combined for golfers wanting to play in a truly majestic Moroccan environment. Designed by golf course architect, Cabell Robinson, the course has a distinctive English countryside character that is both challenging and relaxing. A handicap of 36 is required to play.

Royal Golf Club
This course is 9 holes (in 36) and has been planted with cypress and palm trees as well as a variety of cacti. It is the oldest golf course in the region and offers excellent value-for-money for both the green fees and restaurant.

Marrakech Courses

Some superb courses have been created in tourist cities, thus allowing visitors to go there for both sport and tourism. Marrakech today has three such courses. In winter, three hours from cloudy European skies, golfers can enjoy their sport in the midst of palm groves, with a fairy tale view of the snow-capped Atlas mountains.

Marrakech Palmeraie (Palm Grove) Golf Club
This is a truly majestic 18-hole, par 72 course set on a spacious valley with numerous sand hazards, abundant palm trees and magnificent lakes.

Marrakech Royal Golf Club
Built in the 1920s this is one of the longest established courses in Morocco and was also one of King Hassan II's favourite courses. Winston Churchill, David Lloyd George and General Eisenhower have also played here. It is a course of extreme beauty. Located at the feet of the Atlas mountains, the course has cypress, eucalyptus, palm, olive, orange and apricot trees. It has 18 holes and no handicap restriction.

Amelkis Golf Club
This is a new Cabell Robinson design course located next to the Marrakech Royal Golf Club, with wonderful views of the snow-covered Atlas mountains. Although fairly open, this is a challenging course with plenty of water hazards, bunkers and mounds. It is also 18 holes with no handicap restrictions, but caddies are mandatory.
